The Power of Music on Children and Behavior

There are many roads to therapeutic treatment. Music therapy is one that uses sounds to help people deal with traumatic events in their lives. Through music, clients can be rehabilitated from physical and emotional ailments.
Music therapists are often licensed psychologists who have done further study in music therapy. They are trained in other therapy techniques to use with their client/patients besides music. Music is one way that they communicate with their client/patients.
Children are often treated with music therapy. Much like art therapy, the reward is in the journey and creation of work, not the end product necessarily.
The old adage used in cartoons that “music calms the savage beast” may not be that far off. When we are dealing with behavioral issues, it can seem like our child has a beast living within them. It has taken over your precious little one and you are at a loss to stop it.
Music is a very powerful tool. Even for someone who is not experiencing behavioral problems, listening to music can evoke a wide range of emotions. Simple rhythms can relax you. Upbeat fast tunes can make you happy and your heart race. Lower notes can inspire fear or danger. In a few simple notes played on various instruments you can unlock what is going on inside of another person.
This is what trained music therapists have been striving to do with disturbed children, with some success. Behavioral issues can be a result of an emotional trauma, physical disability or mental imbalance of some kind. Getting at the heart of the problem is what music therapy is all about.
With music therapy, a child is not simply listening to music but also participating in creating it. Listening is done and responses noted, but there are other components. Children are exposed to live performances, how to create music, and improvisation. Musical selections are also shown with visual images as a way of guiding behavior patterns.
Music seems to work because it is open to interpretation by anyone and everyone. It is a medium that becomes what the person wants it to be. For children, it doesn’t intimidate them. It can help children feel safe enough to talk about their trauma and begin to heal. Therapists can discover underlying problems causing behavioral issues not related to developmental deficiencies.
Only a trained therapist need engage in music therapy. Through examination of their child patient, they can devise a course of treatment using the appropriate musical intervention to bring about the best result. Children can relearn destructive behaviors and live normal lives.
Music therapy is one way that has been found to deal with children suffering from behavioral problems. Through varying levels of musical learning, families and these children are getting the holistic wellness approach they need.

Wow Bishop,
It is 6:42 a.m. and I need to take a break. I took a break earlier yesterday evening then I resumed writing with my beautiful MUSIC. I have added so much more to what I am writing. Needless to say, it is not complete at this moment, yet I have made significant progress. My passion has beenn revved up and I can see this book completed. When service is over I will be back to writing and doing the same throughout the week. I feel like I am more on top of it now that I'm working the MUSIC therapy. See you in service. I hope I can keep my eyes open! LOL

You 2 are so connected, spiritually and communicatively - I'm working on it. I agree with both of you - when I hear fast beat, fast paced music, I want to dance and move but when I hear classical music, I want to be still and relax. Music moves us emotionally and spiritually!

The MUSIC therapy is working! I should have turned this MUSIC on weeks ago, even this week or how about earlier today!
I feel stimulated, inspired and PEACEFUL. My original thought was I need quietness so I can focus, read, research and write because this is SERIOUS, THE WORK OF THE LOORRRDDD! Lord help me! I was making myself and the process too tense and pressured. Hence, things were moving slowly. What's funny is that some of the most famous classical pieces were inspired by the composer's spirituality. So why wouldn't I want to hear something spiritual as I work on something spiritual. Everything is spiritual in one way or another. Anywho...back to work.

It is 6:30 p.m. and I just saw your blog comment. I wish I had seen it earlier. I will turn on some classical music IMMEDIATELY. I haven't had any music or tv on since our mentoring session. I have just been focusing on my project. I didn't want anything to DISTRACT me with this particular project. Yet it feels like words and understanding are flowing but they are flowing so SLOWLY. I BET it would be flowing faster, even with this type of project, if I did have some classical music playing. I'm on it now. Thank you Bishop. As you can see, I need a mentor. SMILE

This blog is extremely enlightening. I have heard of the effects of music, concerning education and mood. I have listened to classical music when I felt overloaded with an assignment and my mind would function better - at least that was the case in MY mind! I know of schools that played classical music in class rooms for high school students. This appeared to stimulate their mind and regulate the mood of the class. I definitely know that music impacts children but I had no idea of the depths of music therapy. You really do expose us to numerous approaches to healing. Many children on medication could be healed by participating in holistic health remedies, including music therapy.
